Madrid is one of the safest cities in Europe for LGBTQ+ travellers. Spain legalised same-sex marriage in 2005 and Madrid has one of the most active and politically supported LGBTQ+ communities in the world. Chueca is an openly queer space; the broader city is welcoming throughout. Incidents are rare.
Madrid's gay village is Chueca, centred on Chueca Plaza (Plaza de Chueca) and the streets surrounding it — particularly Calle Pelayo, Calle Hortaleza and the surrounding blocks. It is one of Europe's most concentrated and celebrated LGBTQ+ neighbourhoods, active year-round.
MADO — Madrid Pride 2026 — is expected to run from late June through the first Saturday of July, with the main parade typically on Saturday 4 or 5 July. Exact dates will be confirmed on the MADO official website. Book hotels in Chueca and central Madrid three to four months ahead — the city fills completely during Pride.
World Pride is an international iteration of Pride hosted in different cities, awarded by InterPride. Madrid hosted World Pride in 2017 and again in 2025, both times drawing millions of visitors and delivering exceptional large-scale events. Future World Pride host cities are announced in advance on the InterPride website. Madrid's regular MADO remains one of the world's largest Pride events regardless of World Pride designation.
